Modern Shows

This vintage and modern design show each year attracts people from all over the UK looking to buy collectable furniture and design for the home. Expect to see anywhere from 40 to 100 dealers showcasing either pure mid-century or a mix of mid-century and modern in atmospheres that make the experience an enjoyable day out.  Visit Sunday 18th March and find out why design aficianados rave about the shows and come back again and again.  Find out more here.

Highlighted this month in Elle Decoration’s hot 100 for 2012 and a Time Out  top London attraction.

‘Held in the beautiful and very appropriate Christison building designed by Wates in the Sixties, this show is stuffed with all the recognisable classics of Scandinavian, American and British heroes of 20C design’.

I visited this show last year and bought, probably my best purchase…ever.  A mid century sofa, which has pride of place in my house.

Tickets costs £6.00 via paypal (up until 11 March) or £7.00 on the door

Venue : Dulwich College, London SE21 7LD

Time : 10am-4pm

South East London Mumpreneurs Networking Group

SE London Mumpreneurs Network Group is  a networking group for mumpreneurs who would like to get together on a regular monthly basis to support and inspire eachother, while finding  new business. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 22nd March 2012 at Chapters in Blackheath between 10am -12noon.  The group will run for two hours over coffee and cake.

Find out more here and get in contact with Clare Oliver to book a slot.  I can personally vouch for these events as I attended one when I first opened the shop and was lucky enough to have the founder of Yoga Bugs as a guest speaker.  Her determination and tips on how to succeed in business were invaluable!

Dizzy’s Diner – Michael Buble Tribute Night

Ok, so Dizzy’s Diner in Beckenham isn’t exactly local but it’s not too far and it just happens to be owned by my soon to be brother in law. Their tribute nights are fantastic! Coming up on 23rd March is the very popular Michael Buble Tribute night. Coupled with a three course meal and amazing atmosphere, what’s not to look forward to?  Unless you don’t like Michael Buble that is, in which case you may like their regular motwown nights which are also brilliant.  I’ve been to both and I have to say I had the best time! Contact them to book.

Venue : Dizzy’s Diner, 256-258 High Street, Beckenham, Kent BR3 1DZ

Price : £25.00 per head

Crafty Cooks

Crafty Cooks children’s cooking classes, aimed at 4-11 year olds are now taking bookings for their Easter workshop. Early booking is advisable as classes book very quickly. Crafty Cooks will run during the Easter School Holidays on Monday 2nd April -Thursday 5th April at Rhubarb and Custard on Manor Lane, Lee.  The days are spilt into two cooking sessions and includes a hot lunch and an afternoon Easter craft session.  You can choose to go for half a day, 9.30 -1.30 or for a full day, 9.30 – 3.30.  Prices start at £30.00 and discounts are available for siblings.

Seasonal and organic food is used as much as possible with previous menus including custard creams, cupcakes, pizzas and baked vegetable risotto.  Makes me feel hungry just writing this!

Kids Pottery Painting at Home & Kids

We will be having drop in pottery painting sessions at the shop all through this week, however if you can’t make it during the week, we’re also taking bookings for this Sunday at 10am and 11am.  Prices start at £5.00 and there are no age limits.  Create a long lasting momento, ideal for a Mother’s day  gift.  Contact us at info@homeandkids.co.uk or phone 020 8244 0172 to book a slot on Sunday or just pop in during the week.  We are open 9.30am-5pm.

Cath Kidston in Hither Green!

Yes that’s right…Cath Kidston had a photo shoot in You Don’t Bring Me Flowers  For anyone who has been inside this gorgeous vintage flower/tea shop, it’s not hard to understand why.  Even though they don’t try to be…they are ‘very Cath Kidston’  I feel very lucky to have this gem of a place on the same road as my shop and can’t wait to see the pictures!  I will post them on here when they’re finally printed, however when photo shoots happen it can be for up to a year ahead!

Here are some pictures taken from the YDBMF website but if you can…pay them a visit

Or if you fancy something  a little more mediterranean, visit my lovely sister in law, Laura at Hither Green Deli!  They regularly keep me fed and watered when I’m working at the shop.

In the meantime,  here are some of my favourite things from Cath Kidston, although it’s hard to pick just a few!

Prince Charles recently visited the Cafe of Good Hope on Hither Green Lane to see all the hard work Barry and Margaret Mizen do for young people in the area. I remember the day their lives changed forever.  I live on the next road up from where their family live and the tension and mood was horrible as the police did all their investigations. It’s not a day I will forget and as a mother of four children, I can’t quite comprehend what the Mizen family must have and are still going  through.  It’s quite amazing how Jimmy’s parents have turned such a tragic event into something so positive for their community.  They are an inspiration.

Petra Boase

We have just received an order of the very cute Petra Boase baby clothes collection.  These have always been popular at the shop and have finally got around to re-ordering!  Petra’s designs have a vintage feel to them and are printed on unbleached organic cotton – so perfect for new babies!  I love the little flecks in the fabric which show its pure quality.  We’ve also got some notebooks with similar designs and with Mothers Day coming up soon, some gorgeous cards too!

Half Term Ideas…

With half term coming up, I thought I’d give you a few ideas to make the days go by a bit easier.

Have you heard of Carddies?

They are a fantastic new product created by two very clever sisters, Raquel and Esther.  The idea is so simple yet so effective.  Children can colour a background scene and characters according to theme and then place them in little stands so that the cardboard people can stand. When they’re done playing with them, they fit neatly into a little box that easily fits in your bag, so perfect for on the go entertainment.  I promise you – your children will be occupied for ages.  I was sent a couple of sets to try out on my own children and couldn’t believe how long they sat and coloured and then proceeded to carry out imaginary games with them.  We’ve just received our first delivery of them and they’re already proving very popular!

Incidentally, I had the pleasure of meeting Raquel and Esther at a recent trade fair and they were lucky enough to win an award for the Carddies.  Well done ladies!

With the bitter cold weather we’re experiencing at the moment – I can’t help but feel for the little birds out there in our gardens….I know, I know – It’s ridiculous how sentimental I am. I’ve always been a bit on the soppy side! But with this in mind, how about a fun activity to carry out with your children with one of our Build It Collage Bird House.  Not only can you do your bit for nature but it could be a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon.

Below I’ve listed some links with local activities going on this half term

Crafty Cooks

Munchkins Kids Cooking

Goals Football Holiday Club

Charlton Challenge Football Holiday Club

Also, just a reminder that Blackheath half term funfair will be taking place on the heath from Saturday 11th February to Sunday 19th February.  This year sounds like it will be so much fun with all the usual rides and attractions as well as Punch & Judy puppet shows, a petting farm and even live snakes!

I Love Belle & Boo

The title says it all…I absolutely adore the designs from the very talented Mandy Suttcliffe.

They remind me of days gone by and with their whimsical, enchanting feel they are timeless in design.  These art prints are a great way to update your children’s room.  The middle image above is called Sofia, which just happens to be my youngest daughter’s name – and with that spelling too!  Usually it’s spelt with a ‘ph’ in the middle, and it also just happens to look a bit like her,  so I knew I had to have one.

I can’t wait for one of my children to have a party!  With these party accessories, I think you’ll agree, they are such a welcome relief to the standard party supplies out there.  I will be making an order for the shop soon, so you can enjoy these gorgeous designs too.

Go here for some more fun ideas for kids parties!  Although it has references to shops in America, the ideas are cool and similar items can be found in the UK.
